Most—if not all—of my favorite memories from middle school and high school involve the performing arts.
I started performing at a very young age. My Dad actually has audio recordings of me as a child running around the house and singing. From school talent shows to community and summer theater, I couldn’t get enough of the spotlight. Performing made me feel special and alive, and it brought me some of my closest friendships.
As I grew older, I continued to perform in my school musicals, chorus ensembles, show choir, a capella groups, and more. I attended Columbia University and The Juilliard School, gave solo performances at venues such as The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, and starred in regional and Off-Broadway theatrical productions.
Although I still sing today, my focus has shifted from performing to writing. When I saw how popular movies like High School Musical and television shows like Glee, American Idol, and The Voice became, I thought—why isn’t there a guide for kids who are interested in the performing arts but don’t necessarily know how, or where, to begin their journey?
Enter So You Wanna Be A Superstar?: The Ultimate Audition Guide.
Along with my two fabulous contributors, Nic Cory and Mara Jill Herman, I began to jot down everything I’ve learned from my studies, training, and experience.
This handbook is the perfect tool for kids who want to participate in the arts but need advice on how to put their best feet forward, gain confidence, and select material for their auditions. It provides background information on musicals and their creators, the art of a capella, dance terminology, and various “off stage” roles like directing, choreographing, set and light designing and more, as well as helpful tips from professionals and words of encouragement and advice from Broadway stars.
